CENTRAL CITY-Dorothy LaVerne McRoy passed away in peaceful sleep in the early morning of December 29, 2017. She was being treated at the Owensboro Health Regional Hospital for complications resulting from a fall at her home.

LaVerne was born to David and Elizabeth Moore on November 18, 1923. The family lived in homes in Central City, Wier, and other places in Muhlenberg County before settling on Park Street in Central City. LaVerne graduated from Graham High School as the Valedictorian of the class of 1942. Following graduation, she moved to Evansville to work in an aircraft plant there. After World War II ended, she met and dated returning soldier Robert "Dave" / "R.D." McRoy, and they married in July of 1946. They lived happily together until his passing in April of 2009. Their early married years were spent in their home at the corner of Park and Cherry Streets in Central City, where LaVerne gave birth to sons in 1948, 1949, 1956, and 1960. In the mid-1970s, they moved to a home on Old South Carrolton Road, and finally to LaVerne's parent's home, after their passing, in 1991. After Dave passed away, LaVerne lived on her own there for the rest of her life.

While caring for her four sons and husband, LaVerne also worked as a full-time bookkeeper for the Central City Lumber Company, owned by her father and his two brothers, and later for the Quality Blacktopping Company, owned by her father, then finally for the Lawton Insurance Company. She also served, for decades, as the bookkeeper for the First Christian Church of Central City, and then the New Testament Christian Church, of which she was a founding member. Church attendance and activities were always central to her life. In her later years, she also paid very close attention to the fortunes of the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team.

In her immediate family, LaVerne was preceded in death by a brother, Teddy Randall, who died of disease in infancy, a brother, Norman Moore, her parents, David and Elizabeth Moore, and her husband, Dave. She is survived by her sons: Ron (Jenny), of Phoenix, Arizona, Terry (Jackie) and Bob (Karen), of Central City, and Mick (Susan), of Owensboro. She had six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. LaVerne lived for 94 happy years, and never became so enfeebled by her age that she couldn't live safely, by herself, in her own home, and was always able to enjoy the company of her sons, daughters-in-law, six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She had many wonderful friends, and a husband who loved her until his dying day. She will be sorely missed by all that knew her.

Funeral services will be Sunday, December, 31, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Bro. Matt Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City. Visitation will be Saturday after 5:00 PM at the funeral home. Online condolences can be made at
