After graduating from Drakesboro High School in 1963, Dooney's strong work ethic was first utilized at Lester Motors in Central City, KY at age 17. His fine art of car detailing, customer service and business management was further honed at Darrel Raley's Standard Oil Station, also in Central City. His proud union membership began at Marvel Industries in Greenville, KY and continued at Kentucky Utilities Green River Power Station where he was a dedicated employee for 30 years. After retiring from KU, he worked at Sam's Club in Owensboro, KY.

He served his country in the US Army, was a member of the Baptist faith and was a forever 'band parent.'

Married to Ellen Bivin Spicer, he was 'Dad' to Monica and Jason and relished his role of 'Pappaw' to Preston Grant, Harrison, Anderson and Jett. His hobbies included target practice, bird feeding, growing flowers, perfecting lawn care, attending car shows, watching Cardinal baseball and riding his Harley. Dooney was also an active member of the Owensboro Health Park. While working out, he would often share his strong Democratic Party views with friends and acquaintances.

Dooney is survived by wife, Ellen, of Owensboro; daughter Monica and son-in-law Chris Dockery of Edwardsville, IL; son Murray Jason Spicer and daughter-in-law Erin Spicer of Central City, KY; grandsons Preston Dockery, Harrison Dockery and Anderson Dockery of Edwardsville; and Jett Spicer of Central City.
