Central City- Robert Eugene "Gene" Smith, 90, of Central City died Friday at his residence. Mr. Smith was born September 29, 1924 in Muhlenberg County and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Central City. He worked at Gilbraltar Coal Mines for 30 years. He was a Democrat Chairman for Muhlenberg County and a precinct chairperson. He was elected as a Railroad Commissioner of the state of Kentucky from 1980 to 1984. He was married to his wife, Wanda, for 57 years until her passing in 2006. In 2007, he met his special friend, Mary Armstrong, and they enjoyed each others company until his death.

Survivors include his sons, Mike Smith of Central City, Rickey (Jill) Smith of Central City, Rocky Smith of Florida; daughter, Sheri (Tom) DiGeorge of Florida; grandchildren, Stacey Dearth and Ken Christerson, Mark (Chasitie) Smith, Samantha Smith, Meredith DiGeorge (Dan McGaw), Cassandra (Sam) Davies, Caroline DiGeorge, Tyler Smith, Ashley Faith (Derek Phillips), Kasey Adkins; great-grandchildren, Zachary Dearth, Kaley Dearth, Sarah Dearth, Jaylin Smith, Isaiah Smith, Nolan Juvers, Laila Adkins, Leigha Adkins, Aidan Faith, Brecken Phillips, Elliot Davies, Rosie Davies, Matthew McGaw, Sean McGaw; brother, Bobby Smith of Bremen; and a special friend, Mary Armstrong.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 17, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Carson Bevil officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery.
